2,128 posts advertised by JKPSC: While notification for 1,982 posts referred to the J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) is still awaited
The Jammu and Kashmir government stated that 2,128 posts referred to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) have been advertised, while notification for 1,982 posts referred to the J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) is still awaited.
This information was provided by the General Administration Department in response to a starred question in the Legislative Assembly raised by MLA Vijay Kumar about cadre/department-wise vacant posts referred to recruiting agencies, the number advertised, and related application fees.
Key details from the government reply:
- JKPSC: Details of vacant posts referred to the Commission are in an annexure. It has advertised 2,128 posts; remaining ones will be advertised shortly. From April 1, 2024 onwards (covering 2024-25, 2025-26, and from April 1, 2026 till the reply date), it received 1,69,632 applications against advertised posts.
- JKSSB: Details of referred posts are in separate annexures. The 1,982 posts yet to be advertised will be notified after completion of required formalities under the regulations.
Application and examination fees:
- JKPSC collected ₹15,00,99,000 (approximately ₹15 crore) as examination and application fees from October 2024 to August 2026. It incurred expenditure of ₹14,90,48,575 in the same period. The unutilized balance for August 2024 to September 2026 was reported as nil.
- JKSSB collected ₹81,15,41,900 (approximately ₹81.15 crore) against advertised posts during 2024 and 2025. Expenditure during the last two financial years was ₹27,88,42,444. Of the total JKSSB fees collected, ₹56,67,94,200 pertains to applications for examinations that are yet to be conducted.
The government noted that expenditure cannot be assessed solely against fees collected in a given period, as costs arise at different stages of recruitment and are adjusted against various examinations. Fees help partly meet costs of processing applications, conducting exams, centres/manpower, question papers, security, IT, evaluation, and results (and are not treated as revenue or profit).
Related broader context from recent Assembly data includes tens of thousands of overall vacancies across departments (with Health & Medical Education among the highest) and ongoing recruitment processes at various stages involving thousands of posts with both agencies.
