Yesterday a good news was viral on the media platforms. Two days holiday per week for students, Saturday also to be declared as a holiday. A proposal will be sent to DSE Jammu and Kashmir...Sakina Itoo Cabinet Minister for Education, Health & Medical Education and Social Welfare briefed on it.

 What does this mean for students & teachers if implemented?

 Let's ponder about this. It means schools in Jammu & Kashmir could shift to a five-days week (Monday–Friday), with both Saturday and Sunday as weekly holidays, but only if the proposal is found feasible after review. No final decision has been taken yet.

Current status

- National Conference MLA from Pampore, Hasnain Masoodi, proposed the change, citing growing academic pressure, long study hours, and student exhaustion.

- Education Minister Sakeena (Sakina) Itoo responded that the proposal will be examined by the Directorates of School Education (Kashmir and Jammu, often referred to as DSE). They will assess impacts on required teaching days, syllabus coverage, and exam schedules.

- It will be implemented only if found suitable. Schools continue with the existing schedule (typically six working days) until a formal order is issued.

What it would mean for students if implemented

- Two full days off every week: Fixed Saturday + Sunday weekend for rest, family time, recreation, sports, reading, or independent learning. Proponents say this could reduce burnout and help students return more refreshed.

- Potential adjustment in daily schedule: 

To maintain instructional hours, school days might need to be longer (e.g., concentrating the current ~29 weekly hours into five days instead of six). Without that, weekly teaching time could drop by around 17%, which matters in J&K due to its already shorter academic year (roughly 181 working days vs. 200+ in many other regions, largely because of long winter vacations).

- Possible benefits: Better work-life balance for children, more time for co-curricular activities or recovery from the region’s weather/seasonal challenges.

- Possible drawbacks: Risk of reduced overall learning time if not compensated; students from homes with fewer educational resources might lose structured learning opportunities that school provides on Saturdays. Catch-up, remedial classes, or exams could still use some Saturdays flexibly.

What it would mean for teachers if implemented

- Two consecutive weekly holidays: Similar rest and personal/family time, potentially reducing fatigue from the current six-day pattern.

- Possible longer or restructured working days: Teachers may need to cover the same (or more concentrated) syllabus in five days, which could mean extended hours, adjusted periods, or more intensive daily planning.

- Workload considerations: The Directorates will check that mandatory teaching days and syllabus completion are not compromised. Teacher training, assessments, or remedial sessions might still occur on some Saturdays if needed.

 Overall, it aligns with patterns already seen in many other education systems (and recently in AJK colleges), but implementation would depend on protecting academic standards given J&K’s unique calendar constraints (long winters, harsh summers.).

In short, the change aims at student well-being and a more balanced weekly rhythm, but success hinges on the departmental review ensuring no loss in learning outcomes or required instructional time. It remains a proposal under examination as of mid-to-late September 2026.

सप्ताह में दो दिन छुट्टी! क्या जम्मू-कश्मीर के स्कूलों में शनिवार को भी होगा अवकाश? और इसका बच्चों और टीचरों पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ेगा?

कल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म पर एक अच्छी खबर तेजी से वायरल हुई कि जम्मू-कश्मीर में विद्यार्थियों को सप्ताह में दो दिन छुट्टी देने और शनिवार को भी स्कूलों में अवकाश घोषित करने का प्रस्ताव रखा गया है।

शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य एवं चिकित्सा शिक्षा तथा समाज कल्याण मंत्री सकीना इटू ने इस संबंध में बताया कि प्रस्ताव को स्कूल शिक्षा निदेशालय, जम्मू और कश्मीर के पास भेजकर इसकी व्यवहारिकता पर विचार किया जाएगा।

यदि यह प्रस्ताव मंजूर होता है, तो जम्मू-कश्मीर के स्कूलों में सोमवार से शुक्रवार तक पांच दिन पढ़ाई और शनिवार-रविवार दो दिन साप्ताहिक अवकाश हो सकता है।

लेकिन फिलहाल यह केवल प्रस्ताव है। अभी इस संबंध में कोई अंतिम आदेश जारी नहीं हुआ है।

वर्तमान स्थिति क्या है?

पंपोर के नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस विधायक हसनैन मसूदी ने विद्यार्थियों पर बढ़ते पढ़ाई के दबाव, लंबे समय तक पढ़ाई और बच्चों में बढ़ती थकान को देखते हुए सप्ताह में पांच दिन स्कूल चलाने का सुझाव दिया है।

शिक्षा मंत्री सकीना इटू ने कहा है कि इस प्रस्ताव की जांच स्कूल शिक्षा निदेशालय जम्मू और कश्मीर द्वारा की जाएगी।

इस दौरान यह देखा जाएगा कि:

- पढ़ाई के लिए निर्धारित दिनों पर इसका क्या प्रभाव पड़ेगा।

- पूरा पाठ्यक्रम समय पर पूरा हो पाएगा या नहीं।

- परीक्षाओं के कार्यक्रम पर इसका क्या असर होगा।

- विद्यार्थियों और शिक्षकों के हित में यह व्यवस्था कितनी उपयोगी होगी।

जब तक सरकार की ओर से कोई औपचारिक आदेश जारी नहीं होता, तब तक स्कूलों में वर्तमान व्यवस्था ही लागू रहेगी।

अगर शनिवार की छुट्टी होती है तो विद्यार्थियों को क्या फायदा होगा?

यदि यह व्यवस्था लागू होती है तो बच्चों को हर सप्ताह शनिवार और रविवार लगातार दो दिन छुट्टी मिलेगी।

इससे बच्चों को:

- आराम करने और तनाव कम करने का समय मिलेगा।

- परिवार के साथ अधिक समय बिताने का अवसर मिलेगा।

- खेलकूद और अन्य गतिविधियों के लिए समय मिलेगा।

- अपनी रुचि के अनुसार पढ़ने और सीखने का मौका मिलेगा।

- लगातार छह दिन स्कूल जाने से होने वाली थकान कम हो सकती है।

लेकिन इसका दूसरा पहलू भी है।

यदि स्कूल का एक दिन कम हो जाता है और पढ़ाई के समय की भरपाई नहीं की जाती, तो पूरे सप्ताह की पढ़ाई का समय कम हो सकता है। इसलिए विभाग को यह भी देखना होगा कि बच्चों की पढ़ाई और पाठ्यक्रम पर इसका नकारात्मक प्रभाव न पड़े।

संभव है कि पांच दिनों में पढ़ाई का समय बढ़ाया जाए या स्कूल के समय और पीरियड्स में कुछ बदलाव किया जाए।

जरूरत पड़ने पर शनिवार का उपयोग कभी-कभी रिमेडियल क्लास, परीक्षा, अतिरिक्त पढ़ाई या विशेष गतिविधियों के लिए भी किया जा सकता है।

शिक्षकों के लिए इसका क्या मतलब होगा?

शिक्षकों को भी शनिवार और रविवार लगातार दो दिन छुट्टी मिलने से आराम और परिवार के लिए अधिक समय मिल सकता है।

छह दिन स्कूल जाने की तुलना में पांच दिन काम करने से थकान कम होने और शिक्षकों की कार्यक्षमता बढ़ने की उम्मीद की जा सकती है।

हालांकि, यदि पांच दिनों में ही पूरा पाठ्यक्रम पूरा करना है, तो स्कूल के कार्यदिवस अधिक व्यस्त हो सकते हैं। पीरियड्स की संख्या, स्कूल का समय या शिक्षण व्यवस्था में बदलाव करना पड़ सकता है।

शिक्षकों को कम समय में पाठ्यक्रम पूरा करने, मूल्यांकन करने और विद्यार्थियों की कमजोरियों पर काम करने की अतिरिक्त योजना बनानी पड़ सकती है।

सबसे बड़ी चुनौती क्या होगी?

जम्मू-कश्मीर का शैक्षणिक कैलेंडर देश के कई अन्य राज्यों से अलग है। यहां सर्दियों में लंबी छुट्टियां रहती हैं और और गर्मियों में गर्मी बहुतज्दा होती है। इसके अलावा मौसम के कारण स्कूलों के कार्यदिवस पहले से ही प्रभावित होते हैं।

इसलिए विभाग को यह सुनिश्चित करना होगा कि सप्ताह में एक दिन कम स्कूल लगाने से बच्चों की पढ़ाई, पाठ्यक्रम की गुणवत्ता और परीक्षा परिणाम प्रभावित न हों।

अगर पढ़ाई के समय की उचित भरपाई की जाती है, तो पांच दिन का स्कूल सप्ताह विद्यार्थियों और शिक्षकों दोनों के लिए एक अच्छा बदलाव साबित हो सकता है।

लेकिन यदि पढ़ाई का कुल समय काफी कम हो जाता है, तो इसका असर विशेष रूप से उन बच्चों पर पड़ सकता है जिन्हें स्कूल से मिलने वाली अतिरिक्त शैक्षणिक सहायता की अधिक जरूरत होती है।

निष्कर्ष

कुल मिलाकर, शनिवार की छुट्टी का प्रस्ताव विद्यार्थियों के तनाव को कम करने और उन्हें पढ़ाई के साथ-साथ आराम, खेलकूद तथा परिवार के लिए समय देने की दिशा में एक सकारात्मक कदम हो सकता है।

लेकिन इसकी सफलता इस बात पर निर्भर करेगी कि सरकार और शिक्षा विभाग पढ़ाई के निर्धारित समय, पाठ्यक्रम और शैक्षणिक गुणवत्ता से कोई समझौता किए बिना इस व्यवस्था को कैसे लागू करते हैं।

फिलहाल यह केवल एक प्रस्ताव है और विभागीय स्तर पर इसकी जांच होनी बाकी है। अंतिम फैसला आने के बाद ही यह स्पष्ट होगा कि जम्मू-कश्मीर के स्कूलों में पांच दिन का सप्ताह लागू होगा या नहीं।
