New Delhi, September 21: Domestic LPG consumers will have to complete Aadhaar-based biometric authentication to continue receiving domestic cooking-gas refills at the regulated price with applicable subsidy from October 1, 2026.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has made biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) mandatory for consumers seeking subsidised LPG refills. The government says the move is aimed at ensuring that the subsidy reaches genuine beneficiaries and preventing duplicate or ineligible LPG connections and diversion of subsidised cylinders.

What does this mean for ordinary LPG consumers?

The important point is that your LPG connection will not be cancelled if you have not completed biometric authentication.

However, from October 1, consumers who have not completed BAA will not be able to book a subsidised refill at the regulated price. They can still obtain an LPG cylinder, but will have to pay the applicable market price without subsidy. Once biometric authentication is completed, access to the subsidised refill price can be restored.

Who needs to take action?

Consumers who have already completed Aadhaar biometric authentication do not need to do anything again.

According to the latest figures, around 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers—89.9% of the total—had already completed the authentication process by September 19.

The remaining consumers are being advised to complete the process before the October 1 deadline.

How can biometric authentication be completed?

Consumers can complete the authentication through several routes, including:

• During LPG cylinder delivery, with the delivery person using the oil company's mobile application.
• At the LPG distributor's showroom/office.
• Through the official mobile applications of the respective oil marketing companies, where the facility is available.

Why has the government introduced this requirement?

The government says the exercise is intended to make LPG subsidy delivery more targeted and transparent. Aadhaar-based authentication links the LPG connection to an authenticated consumer and is expected to help identify duplicate, inactive or ineligible connections and prevent subsidised domestic cylinders from being diverted for commercial or industrial use.

What consumers should do now

For households dependent on LPG subsidy, the safest course is to check whether Aadhaar biometric authentication has already been completed. If it has not, consumers should complete it through their LPG distributor, during delivery, or through the authorised oil company's app before October 1.

In simple terms: LPG cylinder supply will continue even without biometric authentication, but the subsidy benefit will not. Therefore, consumers who want to continue receiving their refill at the regulated subsidised price should complete Aadhaar biometric authentication before the deadline.
