Mumbai, September 14, 2026: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah today addressed the Hindi Diwas 2026 and the 6th All India Official Language Conference in Mumbai as the Chief Guest.

Addressing the gathering, Shah highlighted the evolving role of Hindi and said that the addition of more than 50,000 words from local and regional languages to Hindi Shabd-Sindhu has made Hindi, as the official language, more flexible and inclusive.

The Union Home Minister said that Hindi Shabd-Sindhu has now reached around 8 lakh words and expressed confidence that by 2029, it will become the world's largest dictionary.

Shah also conveyed a message against creating linguistic divisions, emphasizing the importance of mother tongues in understanding India. He said that children can understand India correctly and deeply when they learn and connect with the country through their mother tongue.

On the occasion, the Union Home Minister also presented the Rajbhasha Kirti Awards and Rajbhasha Gaurav Awards to recognize outstanding contributions towards the promotion and effective use of the official language.

The event focused on strengthening Hindi while respecting India's rich linguistic diversity and promoting greater harmony among the country's languages.
