Trump Hails Saudi Arabia-Türkiye-Pakistan Defence Pact as “Big, Bold” First Step
Washington, August 17, 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump has welcomed the recently signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, describing the trilateral pact as a “big, bold, and important first step” toward stronger regional security cooperation.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he was “very happy” that Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan had finally signed the agreement. He congratulated the leadership of the three countries and said the pact demonstrated that countries in the Middle East were coming together to strengthen their ability to defend themselves.
The agreement was signed in Makkah on August 7, 2026, establishing a framework for closer defence and military cooperation among the three countries. A key principle of the pact is that an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three.
Expanded Military Cooperation
The agreement provides for deeper coordination between the armed forces of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan. According to details reported following the signing, the countries plan to strengthen cooperation through joint military exercises, strategic coordination and collaboration in areas including land, sea, air and cyber operations. Defence technology, unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence are also among the areas identified for greater cooperation.
The pact comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East, with regional countries seeking stronger security arrangements amid continuing instability and concerns over attacks and missile threats. Reuters reported that the agreement reflects efforts by the three countries to enhance regional defence cooperation and develop greater strategic capacity.
Trump Calls It a Major First Step
Trump's public endorsement gives the agreement additional international attention. While praising the pact, he did not announce any direct U.S. role in the trilateral defence arrangement.
Trump concluded his message by calling the agreement a “BIG, BOLD, AND IMPORTANT FIRST STEP — WOW!”, signalling strong political support for the three countries' efforts to deepen their security partnership.
The new arrangement could have wider geopolitical implications as Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan seek to coordinate more closely on regional security while maintaining their existing relationships with major global powers.
