Seoul, August 16, 2026: South Korea’s military said it fired warning shots after several North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the eastern section of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the North Korean troops crossed the boundary last week. South Korean forces issued warnings and fired warning shots in accordance with established operational procedures, prompting the soldiers to retreat to the North Korean side.

The incident is reportedly the first known violation of the Military Demarcation Line by North Korean troops in 2026. South Korean officials believe the soldiers may have crossed the boundary while conducting a routine patrol, rather than as part of a deliberate hostile action.

No casualties or further unusual activity were reported following the incident. The development comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea recently conducting missile launches and strongly criticizing upcoming joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.

The two Koreas remain technically at war, as the 1950–53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. South Korea has said it remains on high alert and is closely monitoring North Korean military activity along the border.
