Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Reviews Quality, Maintenance, and Progress of National Highways in J&K and Ladakh

 


New Delhi, June 26, 2026: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, conducted a comprehensive review of the quality, maintenance, and progress of National Highway projects in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, along with Telangana. The meetings were held in New Delhi on June 25.


During the dedicated sessions for the two northern UTs, Gadkari examined ongoing works covering 2,035 km of National Highways in Jammu & Kashmir and 804 km in Ladakh.

 The review focused on project status, maintenance activities, and steps being taken to deliver safe, efficient, and durable infrastructure in these strategically important and challenging terrains.


 Key Highlights of the Review:

- Emphasis on Quality and Durability: The Minister stressed the need for high construction standards, adoption of advanced technologies, and best engineering practices to ensure long-term performance, especially in the difficult Himalayan regions.

- Monsoon Preparedness: Gadkari directed officials to implement robust preventive and mitigation measures across all project stretches ahead of the monsoon season to minimize disruptions.

- Connectivity Goals: Improved highways are expected to boost economic growth, tourism, regional connectivity, and support strategic needs in J&K and Ladakh.

- Monitoring and Timely Completion: Officials were instructed to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and accelerate project implementation where required.


The total review across the three regions covered approximately 7,770 km of National Highways (4,931 km in Telangana, 2,035 km in J&K, and 804 km in Ladakh). Gadkari also took inputs from media reports and social media feedback during the assessment.


This review highlights the government's continued push to enhance road infrastructure in border and hilly areas, aiming for seamless all-weather connectivity that supports both civilian and strategic requirements.
