Srinagar, June 14: Fresh rainfall across Kashmir brought much-needed relief from the recent spell of intense heat, with temperatures dropping significantly in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley. However, the rains also led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, disrupting normal life and traffic movement.

According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), the wet weather is expected to continue over the coming days, with forecasts predicting intermittent rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of flash floods, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

The rainfall, while beneficial for agriculture and water resources, has raised concerns in hilly regions where unstable slopes pose a risk during prolonged precipitation. Several areas reported minor incidents of water accumulation, prompting local administrations to remain on alert.

Meanwhile, landslides and falling debris affected movement on key road links, including stretches of the Jammu–Poonch National Highway, causing temporary disruptions and highlighting the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions in mountainous terrain. A massive landslide has been reported at Kalaban on the new alignment of the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch National Highway in Rajouri district. The incident occurred on an under-construction stretch near Kotli village in Manjakote, where a significant portion of land caved in. No loss of life or major property damage has been reported. Highway upgradation and construction work is being carried out by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Officials have advised residents, particularly those living near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories issued by the administration. Emergency response teams have also been placed on standby to deal with any weather-related incidents.

The changing weather pattern is expected to provide respite from the recent heatwave but may also bring localized disruptions as the region braces for further rainfall in the days ahead.
