Centre Approves ₹25,530 Crore Scheme to Strengthen and Modernise PDS

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved a significant ₹25,530 crore Sarthak PDS scheme* to strengthen ration shops and modernise India’s Public Distribution System (PDS). The five-year initiative, running until March 2031, was announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Major Boon for BPL and Poor Families

This scheme will directly benefit over 80 crore people by providing them free one-month ration under the strengthened system. It is expected to be a game-changer for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, daily wage earners, small farmers, and vulnerable sections by ensuring reliable, transparent, and efficient delivery of subsidised foodgrains.

 Key Benefits and Impact

- Huge Cost Savings & Efficiency: The scheme will generate annual savings of ₹280 crores through optimised operations.

- Environment-Friendly: It aims for a 36% reduction in carbon emissions by streamlining supply chains.

- Reduced Travel Distance: Transportation of foodgrains will see a 15-50% reduction in travel distance, leading to lower logistic and transportation costs.

- Better Access for BPL Families: Easier beneficiary identification, fast grievance redressal, and an advanced food distribution system will minimise leakages and ensure BPL households receive their full entitled quota without harassment or delays.

 Technological Upgrades

The Sarthak scheme introduces a modern, AI-based smart and transparent system with:

- QR-coded foodgrain bags for better tracking and authenticity

- GPS-enabled transport tracking

- Real-time dashboard monitoring

- SARTHAK-POS for seamless distribution at fair price shops

Support Measures

- Transport Support for States

- Financial Aid for Fair Price Shops to improve their viability, especially in rural and remote areas

 Three Components of Sarthak

The scheme is built on three pillars:

- NIRMAL – Clean and transparent operations

- ASHA – Strengthened access and support for beneficiaries

- SAKSHAM – Empowered and efficient distribution system

By modernising the world’s largest food security network, this initiative will greatly enhance food security for BPL families, reduce middlemen interference, and ensure nutritional support reaches the poorest households more effectively.

This comprehensive push is expected to provide substantial relief to millions of economically weaker families amid rising living costs.
